On 12th March 2025, thanks to the amazing efforts of our collaborators, we successfully achieved our goal of enrolling 500 patients in our study. However, as patients were screened through various methods at different locations, we officially closed the recruitment phase on 17th March. The last patients were added to our REDCap database yesterday.
We have now entered the next phase of the study, which focuses on gathering any missing information and validating the data we have collected. This means that new collaborators, called "data validators" will re-enter the data to ensure its accuracy and reliability. This phase will last for six weeks, during which patients can still choose to withdraw from this part of the feasibility study until it concludes on 7th May 2025.
Following this, we will proceed to the analysis phase of the study.
We will evaluate the results from the internal pilot study alongside findings from the interview-based study. The interview study is also ongoing and is still recruiting participants. By examining all these results together, we can make a decision on whether P-iGBC is feasible and beneficial for patients, healthcare professionals, and the health service as a whole.
If we find that continuing the study is feasible, we will seek additional funding and aim to have the project included in the NIHR Research Portfolio, which would provide further support for researchers at involved sites. Once we secure this, we plan to launch the study at several locations across the country. It is essential for the study to be national in scope to represent the diverse populations throughout the United Kingdom. We anticipate needing around 26,000 complete patient records, which is approximately one-third of the gallbladder surgeries performed in the UK each year. Whilst most of the systems are already in place for recruitment and data collection, additional funding is needed to support researchers at each of the sites and the central administration of the study.
